Commerce Secretary Highlights Strategies to Boost Indian Organic Export Potential

With the rising importance of organic produce across the world, India achieved an export worth $495 million in FY 2024. However, the milestone is just a meager share of the pie of the total export market. Leveraging to augment the Indian export potential of organic produce, commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal focused on five key aspects in a three-day event ‘BIOFACH INDIA 2024’ and ‘MILLETS INDIA exhibitions. He also highlighted the recent provisions to boost sectoral performance. The main highlights of the discussion are:

  • Provisions were made in the recent budget to set up 100 labs for quality checks.
  • The government is in discussion with other nations about implementing MRA.
  • Stakeholders need to work on five crucial areas to boost export potential. These are certification and testing, labeling, packaging, branding, and logistics.
  • Successfully implemented the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for organic exports between India and Taiwan last year.
